Richmond, Virginia has a rich history that dates all the way back to the early 17th century. It’s known as one of our country’s oldest cities, as its development took place after King James I granted permission to the London Company to build settlements in the area. Following the American Revolution, Richmond developed into a manufacturing hub. Flour mills and ironworks were largely popular. After the Civil War, Richmond became even more powerful from an economic standpoint. Railways and streetcar systems began to take off in order to boost transportation. The Jackson Ward district was created, which was one of the first African-American districts in the U.S. Its financial district was well known as the ‘Wall Street of Black America’.
Contrary to popular belief, Richmond wasn’t actually the first capital of the Confederacy. Montgomery, Alabama was chosen to receive this title in 1861. Virginia left the Union after Fort Sumter was bombarded, and leadership considered Richmond as the new capital. After all, Virginia was functioning as the largest state in the south. Due to a strong connection with the American Revolution, the Confederacy felt it would be a wise move to confirm the transfer of title. Just three months after Montgomery was appointed the capital, Richmond received the approval.
There is still a large majority of preserved battlefields in the Richmond, Virginia area that can be toured today. One of the most commonly visited is The Richmond National Battlefield Park. The American Battlefield Trust works hard to preserve these history-rich areas, having saved 3,100 acres in the Richmond area.
